“The Holly and the Ivy” (traditional English)

This traditional Christmas carol is referenced in some form or another as early as 1710. Long associated with the sacred (by early Pagans, then the Romans, and, finally, by the Christians), this carol compares the attributes of the plant and its hearty winter fruit with the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ.
