Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990), “America” from West Side Story (1957)
Leonard Bernstein is one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century music.Aside from writing the widely known musical West Side Story, Bernstein was one of the New York Philharmonic’s most famous conductors, and he pioneered children’s education programs in music. Bernstein also created a volume of works that are now a part of the standard classical repertoire, including three symphonies and the choral masterwork “Chichester Psalms.”
