Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), Theme from Variations in F Minor, Hob. XVII:6 

While many late eighteenth-century variation sets borrowed a pre-existing melody for the theme, composers also composed their own themes quite often. Listen for the special harmonic arrival near the end of Haydn's theme that suggested its inclusion in this chapter.
